About the programme
National Institute of Design Ahmedabad was established in 1961 following a study commissioned by the Government of India and conducted by American designers Charles and Ray Eames. That report shaped the founding vision of NID: a school where design was a discipline in its own right, rooted in craft, culture, and function. Over sixty years later, that philosophy still runs through the curriculum.
The B.Des programme at NID Ahmedabad is structured around studio-based learning with parallel coursework in design history, materials, user research, and visual thinking. Students choose their specialisation from day one, so the learning environment is focused from the start. The width of specialisations on offer, from toy design to transport design, is unmatched at any other Indian design institution.
Ahmedabad itself is a UNESCO World Heritage City with a long tradition of craft, textile, and architectural excellence. Students regularly engage with Gujarati craft communities, local artisans, and cultural organisations as part of studio projects. This rootedness in Indian material culture gives NID graduates a perspective that is distinct from programmes at purely technology-focused institutions.
Alumni from NID Ahmedabad are widely distributed across design leadership roles at Indian and multinational companies, as well as in design entrepreneurship. Many have founded studios that are well regarded across the industry.
Admission is through the NID DAT: a Prelims stage that shortlists candidates through a written and drawing test, followed by a Mains stage held at NID campuses with studio tests and interviews. There is no UCEED pathway to NID. Apply at nid.edu during the application window, typically opening in October each year.
