How to choose between B.Des, M.Des and B.Arch

The choice between B.Des, M.Des and B.Arch is primarily determined by where you are in your academic journey, not just by interest. If you are finishing Class 12, your options are B.Des or B.Arch. M.Des is only available after completing an undergraduate degree.

B.Des is the most flexible of the three. It covers a wide range of design disciplines: product design, visual communication, user experience, fashion, animation, furniture and more. Most IIT, NID and NIFT programmes offer specialisation from the second or third year. The entrance exams vary by institution (UCEED for IITs, NID DAT for NIDs, NIFT entrance for NIFT campuses) but all test a combination of visual reasoning, design aptitude and creative problem-solving.

B.Arch has a very different nature. It is a 5-year professional degree regulated by the Council of Architecture. You cannot practice as a licensed architect without it (or an equivalent CoA-recognised qualification). Entrance through NATA or JEE Main Paper 2 requires Class 12 with Physics, Chemistry and Mathematics. The curriculum is heavy on technical drawing, structures, materials and construction law in addition to design. If spatial design, cities, buildings and the built environment are your passion, B.Arch is the path.

M.Des is for graduates who want to deepen their design expertise, shift into a research or leadership track, or transition from engineering, architecture or fine arts into design. CEED (conducted by IIT Bombay) is the primary entrance for IIT M.Des programmes. NID runs its own postgraduate test. Many M.Des students take 1 to 2 years of industry experience between their B.Des and M.Des to build a stronger portfolio before applying.

One common question: can a B.Tech student apply for M.Des? Yes. IIT Bombay IDC, IIT Delhi, IIT Hyderabad and most other IIT M.Des programmes accept B.Tech or B.E. graduates in CEED-qualifying disciplines. In fact, a significant proportion of M.Des students at IITs come from engineering backgrounds.

Common questions about design courses

Which is better: B.Des at IIT or B.Des at NID?

Both are outstanding. IIT B.Des (via UCEED) leans toward technology-integrated design: UX, industrial, interaction. NID (via NID DAT) has a longer legacy in craft, product and communication design with a studio-first approach. The better choice depends on your specialisation preference, not prestige alone.

Can a science student apply for B.Des?

Yes. B.Des at IITs (UCEED), NIDs (NID DAT) and NIFTs (NIFT Entrance) accepts Class 12 students from any stream: Science, Commerce or Arts. Some institutions require a minimum 50โ€“60% aggregate. Your stream does not determine eligibility for most B.Des programmes.

Is B.Arch different from B.Des (Interior Design)?

Yes, significantly. B.Arch is a 5-year CoA-regulated professional degree required for practicing as a licensed architect. B.Des (Interior Design) or B.Des (Furniture Design) is a 4-year design degree with a different curriculum and no council regulation. For legal architecture practice, B.Arch is mandatory.

What is the average salary after B.Des in India?

Entry-level salaries vary by specialisation and institution. UX designers from IITs and NIDs typically start at โ‚น8Lโ€“18L per annum at product companies. Fashion designers at NIFT often start at โ‚น4Lโ€“10L depending on the employer. Animation and visual design roles range widely from โ‚น4L to โ‚น15L+ based on studio and city.

Is a portfolio required for design college admission?

It depends on the institute. IIT B.Des (UCEED) does not require a separate portfolio. NID shortlists candidates based on DAT Prelims, then evaluates portfolio and studio test in Mains. NIFT assesses creative ability through the Situation Test (a hands-on studio exercise), not a pre-prepared portfolio. Private institutes often require portfolios during counselling.
