What is B.Des and should you pursue it?

If you are new to design education, here is what a B.Des degree actually means.

B.Des, or Bachelor of Design, is a 4-year undergraduate programme in design thinking, visual communication, industrial design or interaction design. In India, you can pursue it at IITs via UCEED, at NIDs via NID DAT, or at NIFT campuses via the NIFT entrance exam. Government college fees range from Rs 8 lakh (IITs) to Rs 17 lakh (NIDs) for the full four years.

Frequently asked questions

Common questions about design entrance exams in India.

What are the main design entrance exams in India?
India has five major design entrance exams. UCEED (Undergraduate Common Entrance Exam for Design) is conducted by IIT Bombay and gives access to B.Des at 7 IITs and IIITDM Jabalpur. NID DAT is the National Institute of Design aptitude test for 23 NID campuses. The NIFT entrance exam covers 20 NIFT campuses for fashion and design programmes. NATA is for B.Arch admissions. CEED, also by IIT Bombay, is the postgraduate equivalent for M.Des at IITs and IISc. Each exam is independent: your UCEED score does not count toward NIFT or NID admissions.
How do I choose the right design entrance exam for me?
The right exam depends on the design discipline you want to study and the institutions you are targeting. If product design, UX design or interaction design at an IIT appeals to you, UCEED is your path. If fashion design or textile design at a government institute is your goal, the NIFT entrance exam leads to 20 campuses nationwide. NID DAT suits students drawn to industrial design, communication design or craft. Browse the college directory and read our exam comparison on the blog to match the exam to your interests.
What is the eligibility for design entrance exams in India?
For most undergraduate design entrance exams, you need 10+2 in any stream. UCEED requires a minimum 60% aggregate (55% for SC/ST/PwD). NID DAT has no minimum percentage but requires you to be in your final year of 10+2 or have completed it. The NIFT entrance exam requires 10+2 completion with an age limit of 24 years as of August 1 of the admission year. There is no age limit for UCEED or NID DAT. A science or arts background is not mandatory for any of these exams.
Which design entrance exam is the most competitive?
UCEED is generally the most selective: roughly 15,000 students compete for around 245 seats across all accepting institutions, giving an acceptance rate below 2%. NID DAT is similarly competitive, with approximately 425 seats for thousands of applicants. The NIFT entrance exam has more seats (3,423 B.Des seats across 20 campuses), making entry relatively more accessible. Competitiveness also varies by your strengths: UCEED tests systematic design thinking; NID DAT tests design sensibility and craft; NIFT evaluates creative aptitude through a Situation Test.
How early should I start preparing for design entrance exams?
Most students who clear UCEED or NID DAT begin preparation 12 to 18 months before the exam. Preparation involves building visual observation habits, practising sketching and perspective drawing, solving past papers, and developing systematic design thinking. ShapeVerse provides UCEED past papers from 2019 to 2026 and free mock tests to help you benchmark your progress. For a structured timeline, read our month-by-month UCEED preparation guide on the blog.
