NATA is India's gateway to 5-year B.Arch programmes at over 600 government and private architecture colleges. Unlike most design entrance exams, it runs twice every year: Phase 1 from April to June (multiple Fridays and Saturdays) and Phase 2 in August. Each student appears in one phase per year. Conducted by the Council of Architecture (CoA), NATA is the largest design-adjacent entrance exam in India with over 90,000 students appearing annually.

Eligibility criteria

The Council of Architecture sets uniform eligibility rules that apply to all colleges accepting NATA scores.

โœ“

Academic qualification

Passed or appearing in 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as main subjects. Arts and Commerce students without PCM are not eligible.

โœ“

Minimum marks

At least 50% aggregate in 10+2. SC/ST candidates: 45% as per most state norms. Verify with individual colleges.

โœ“

Appearing candidates

Students appearing in Class 12 board exams in 2026 can apply provisionally. Marksheets must be submitted to colleges during counselling.

โœ“

Age limit

No upper age limit set by CoA. Some individual states may have age policies. Check with your target college.

โœ“

Attempts per year

One phase per year. Students who appear in Phase 1 are NOT eligible for Phase 2 in the same year. You can attempt again in subsequent years.

SPA Delhi does not accept NATA

This is the most widespread misconception in B.Arch preparation. School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (SPA Delhi) uses JEE Main Paper 2 (B.Arch) scores, not NATA, for admissions. Confirmed at spa.ac.in.

If SPA Delhi is your target, you must appear for JEE Main Paper 2 in January/April. Your NATA score will not be considered at SPA Delhi under any circumstances.

SPA Vijayawada and SPA Bhopal have different admission processes. Verify their current requirements at their official websites. Many aggregator sites list SPA Delhi as a NATA college. ShapeVerse does not.

Previous year papers

CoA releases official NATA papers and answer keys after each session at nata.in. Part B answer keys are published online. Part A drawing papers are released as scanned PDFs. ShapeVerse indexes all available official releases with direct links to the CoA portal.

Frequently asked questions

What is NATA and who conducts it?
NATA (National Aptitude Test in Architecture) is a national-level entrance exam for admission to 5-year B.Arch programmes across India. It is conducted by the Council of Architecture (CoA), the statutory authority under the Architects Act, 1972. The official portal is nata.in.
How many times is NATA conducted per year?
NATA is conducted twice per year. Phase 1 runs from April to June (multiple test dates on Fridays and Saturdays); Phase 2 is held in August. Each session has its own score. Important: students who register and appear for Phase 1 are NOT eligible to appear in Phase 2 of the same year. You must choose one phase per year.
What is the NATA 2026 exam pattern?
NATA 2026 has two parts. Part A (Drawing) has 3 questions worth 80 marks, testing spatial ability, sketching, and visualisation, answered on paper at the exam centre. Part B (PCM and Aptitude) has MCQ and NAT questions worth 120 marks, covering Mathematics, Physics, Chemistry, and logical reasoning in a computer-based test. Total: 200 marks in 3 hours.
What is the eligibility for NATA 2026?
You must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics as subjects, with a minimum 50% aggregate marks. Students appearing in their Class 12 board exams in 2026 may apply provisionally. There is no upper age limit for NATA.
Does SPA Delhi accept NATA scores?
No. School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (SPA Delhi) does NOT accept NATA scores. SPA Delhi uses JEE Main Paper 2 (B.Arch) scores exclusively for B.Arch admissions. This is one of the most common misconceptions about NATA. Always verify admission requirements at the official college website before applying.
What is a good NATA score for top colleges?
For top government colleges like CEPT University, Sir J.J. College of Architecture (Mumbai), and SPA campuses (Bhopal, Vijayawada), a NATA score above 150 out of 200 is generally competitive. For state government colleges, 100-120 is typically sufficient. Actual cutoffs vary by year and category.
Can I take NATA after Arts or Commerce in Class 12?
No. NATA eligibility requires Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics in Class 12. Students from Arts or Commerce streams without PCM are not eligible. This is a firm requirement set by the Council of Architecture and cannot be waived by individual colleges.
How long is a NATA score valid?
NATA scores are valid for 2 academic years from the year of the attempt. A score from NATA 2026 (Phase 1 or Phase 2) can be used for admissions in both 2026-27 and 2027-28 academic years. Verify with individual colleges, as some may specify a single-year validity in their admission policies.
