The one rule that matters most
You must have Mathematics in Class 12. Your stream does not matter.
Science, Commerce, or Arts: all streams are eligible if Mathematics is on your marksheet. This is what sets NATA apart from most engineering entrance exams. No age limit. No stream restriction.
Eligibility by stream combination
PCM (Science)
Eligible
Mathematics is core. Straightforward eligibility.
PCB + Mathematics
Eligible
Biology students who also studied Maths qualify.
PCB (without Mathematics)
Not eligible
No Mathematics subject means ineligible for NATA.
Commerce with Mathematics
Eligible
Standard Maths on your marksheet is sufficient.
Commerce without Mathematics
Not eligible
Accounts or Statistics alone do not substitute for Mathematics.
Arts/Humanities with Mathematics
Eligible
Humanities stream with Maths is fully accepted.
Arts without Mathematics
Not eligible
Without a Mathematics subject, eligibility is not met.
Gap year / passed Class 12 earlier
Eligible
No time limit on Class 12 qualification for NATA.
The single most important eligibility rule
NATA eligibility is simpler than most students expect, but one rule is frequently misunderstood. Here it is plainly:
You must have Mathematics as a subject in Class 12. Your stream does not matter.
That is the defining criterion. A student from the Science stream, Commerce stream, or Arts stream is equally eligible if Mathematics was part of their Class 12 curriculum. The Council of Architecture (CoA) is explicit about this. NATA does not restrict itself to Science stream students.
This is meaningfully different from engineering exams like JEE Main, which assume a PCM background. NATA is open to anyone with Class 12 Mathematics, regardless of what other subjects they studied.

The Mathematics requirement in detail
Mathematics must be a subject in your Class 12 curriculum. Here is how this plays out across common stream combinations:
PCM (Physics, Chemistry, Mathematics): Fully eligible. Mathematics is core.
PCB plus Mathematics: Fully eligible. Students who take PCB as their main science combination but added Mathematics as an additional or fifth subject are eligible.
PCB without Mathematics: Not eligible. Having Physics, Chemistry, and Biology but no Mathematics means you do not meet the criterion. This is one of the most common disqualifying situations.
Commerce with Mathematics: Eligible. Commerce stream students who studied Mathematics (not just Accounts or Statistics) are eligible.
Commerce without Mathematics: Not eligible. If your Commerce stream did not include Mathematics as a subject (only Accounts, Business Studies, Economics), you cannot appear for NATA.
Arts/Humanities with Mathematics: Eligible. Students from the Humanities stream who studied Mathematics as one of their subjects can appear.
Arts/Humanities without Mathematics: Not eligible.
If you are uncertain whether your board's subject counts as "Mathematics" for NATA eligibility (e.g., Applied Mathematics, Business Mathematics, or other variants), check with the Council of Architecture directly at nata.in or their helpline, or refer to the eligibility clause in the current year's information bulletin.
Class 12 marks: the 50% aggregate
NATA requires a minimum of 50% in your Class 12 aggregate. A few important clarifications:
When is this checked? The 50% criterion is verified during college counselling and admission, not when you register for NATA or during the NATA exam itself. You can register and appear for NATA even if your marks are borderline or if your Class 12 result is not yet finalised.
What counts toward the aggregate? Your overall Class 12 result percentage as calculated by your board, typically across all five subjects listed on your marksheet. There is no special exclusion of any subject from this calculation.
What about students who are borderline? If you have 48-52% in Class 12, register and appear for NATA anyway. The eligibility verification happens during college admission. By then, you may also have the option of grace marks, re-verification of marks, or supplementary exams depending on your board.
SC/ST/PwD relaxation: The CoA does not centrally define relaxed aggregate criteria for reserved categories; individual colleges and state counselling bodies may offer relaxation. Check the specific policy of each college you are applying to.
Students currently in Class 12
If you are in the final year of Class 12 at the time of NATA registration, you are eligible to register and appear. This is explicitly allowed by CoA.
What you need for registration: your school identity card or an undertaking from your institution confirming your Class 12 enrolment. You declare "appearing" rather than "passed" in Class 12 on the registration form.
After NATA: you receive your score. You use this score for college counselling. Before actual admission, you must produce your final Class 12 marksheet showing you passed with the required aggregate and Mathematics.
This arrangement is important for students who want to appear for NATA Phase 1 (April) while their Class 12 boards are still ongoing or just completed in March-April. You can apply, take the exam, and then complete Class 12 simultaneously.
Special cases and clarifications
Gap year students
Students who passed Class 12 one, two, or more years ago are fully eligible. There is no recency requirement on your Class 12 qualification. NATA has no upper age limit, so gap-year students face no barrier from an eligibility standpoint.
Diploma holders
Some students complete a 3-year Polytechnic diploma instead of Class 12. NATA eligibility is primarily framed around Class 12. If you hold a diploma, verify directly with the Council of Architecture whether your qualification is accepted as equivalent. Diploma holders typically need to follow a lateral entry route for B.Arch; the standard NATA process is designed for Class 12 applicants.
Foreign board students (IGCSE, IB, A-levels)
Students from the International Baccalaureate (IB), Cambridge IGCSE/A-level, or other foreign boards may be eligible if their qualification is recognised as equivalent to Indian Class 12 by the Association of Indian Universities (AIU). Mathematics must be a subject in their qualifying examination. Contact CoA with your certificate for a verification before registering.
Students who failed one subject in Class 12
If you failed one subject in Class 12 but passed all others (including Mathematics), your eligibility depends on whether you cleared the supplementary/compartment exam. A passed supplementary result restores your eligibility. An open fail without supplementary clearance typically makes you ineligible until you clear the subject.
The SPA Delhi distinction
School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi does NOT accept NATA. SPA Delhi requires JEE Main Paper 2 (Architecture) for B.Arch admissions. This is the most frequently misunderstood fact in B.Arch admissions. If SPA Delhi is among your target institutions, NATA eligibility for that college is not relevant: you need to be eligible for JEE Main instead.
The 600+ B.Arch colleges that accept NATA are listed on the CoA website. Always verify that your target college is on this list and uses NATA before assuming your NATA score will apply there.
After confirming eligibility: your next steps
Once you have confirmed that you are eligible for NATA, the path forward is:
Step 1: Verify the registration window. NATA registration typically opens 2-3 months before each exam phase. Check nata.in for the current cycle's dates.
Step 2: Prepare your documents. You will need identity proof, a recent photograph, Class 12 documents (marksheet or admit card if appearing), and payment for the registration fee.
Step 3: Register at nata.in. Fill out the registration form carefully. Choose your exam phase (Phase 1 or Phase 2) and preferred exam centre.
Step 4: Begin preparation. The NATA syllabus covers Part A Drawing (80 marks) and Part B PCM and Aptitude (120 marks). The preparation guide on ShapeVerse covers both sections in detail.
Important: SPA Delhi does not use NATA
School of Planning and Architecture, Delhi requires JEE Main Paper 2, not NATA. Being eligible for NATA does not make you eligible for SPA Delhi's admission process. If SPA Delhi is your goal, visit the JEE Paper 2 guide.
Frequently asked questions
+ Can a PCB student appear for NATA?
Yes, a PCB student can appear for NATA if Mathematics was also a subject in their Class 12. Many Science stream students take PCB plus Mathematics as a fifth subject. If Mathematics is on your Class 12 certificate, you are eligible regardless of whether your primary stream was PCB. If you studied PCB without any Mathematics subject, you are not eligible for NATA.
+ Can a Commerce student appear for NATA?
Yes. Commerce students are fully eligible for NATA provided Mathematics was one of their Class 12 subjects. Commerce with Mathematics (a common combination in CBSE, ISC, and many state boards) makes you eligible. Commerce with Applied Mathematics or Business Mathematics may or may not qualify; verify with the Council of Architecture for your specific board and subject code. Standard Mathematics is unambiguously accepted.
+ Can an Arts student appear for NATA?
Yes. Arts or Humanities students who studied Mathematics as one of their Class 12 subjects are eligible for NATA. The stream label does not determine eligibility; the presence of Mathematics on your Class 12 marksheet does. This is one of NATA's genuinely open features: it does not restrict entry to Science stream students, which is different from many other engineering and technical entrance exams.
+ Is there an upper age limit for NATA?
No. NATA does not impose any upper age limit. Whether you are 17 or 35, you can register and appear for NATA as long as you meet the educational qualification criteria. This makes NATA accessible to gap-year students, career changers, and students who passed Class 12 several years ago. The only age-adjacent consideration is that some B.Arch colleges may have their own age norms for admission, so verify with your target college.
+ What if I failed Mathematics in Class 12?
If you appeared for Mathematics in Class 12 but failed the subject, you are generally not considered to have "passed" Mathematics. Most colleges and the CoA eligibility criteria require you to have passed Mathematics, not merely appeared for it. If you are in this situation, check the exact CoA wording in the NATA 2027 information bulletin on nata.in for the current year's policy. Repeating Class 12 Mathematics is typically the path forward if you want to strengthen your application.
+ Does the 50% aggregate include or exclude Mathematics?
The 50% aggregate in Class 12 is calculated across all subjects in the Class 12 certificate. This typically means all five subjects in the standard certificate, including Mathematics. There is no special exclusion or inclusion of specific subjects for the aggregate calculation. Your overall Class 12 result percentage (as printed on your marksheet or board result) is what colleges use.
+ Can I appear for NATA if I passed Class 12 five years ago?
Yes. There is no time limit or expiry on your Class 12 qualification for NATA eligibility. A student who passed Class 12 in 2019 and is appearing for NATA in 2027 is fully eligible, provided they met the Mathematics and 50% aggregate criteria. However, since NATA score validity is two years, ensure your target colleges accept Class 12 certificates from several years ago (most do, but verify).
+ Do I need to clear Class 12 before appearing for NATA or can I register while in Class 12?
You can register and appear for NATA while still appearing in Class 12 final examinations. You do not need to have completed Class 12 before the NATA exam. At the time of registration, you declare that you are "appearing" in Class 12. Your final Class 12 result must be available and submitted before you can take actual admission in a B.Arch college. NATA registration accepts both "passed" and "appearing" candidates.
