JEE Main Paper 2 is India's gateway to B.Arch and B.Planning programmes at the most prestigious government architecture institutions, including School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Delhi, the NITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). Unlike NATA, which serves a broad network of 600+ B.Arch colleges, JEE Paper 2 is the single qualifying exam for a smaller, more selective set of institutions. Conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) in two sessions every year (January and April), it draws approximately 2.5 lakh candidates annually across Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning).

JEE Paper 2 vs NATA: which exam to take

Many B.Arch aspirants are unsure whether to take JEE Paper 2, NATA, or both. The answer depends on which colleges you are targeting.

Factor JEE Main Paper 2 NATA
Conducting body NTA Council of Architecture (CoA)
College network ~40-50 CFTIs (SPAs, NITs) 600+ govt and private colleges
Sessions per year 2 (Jan, Apr) 2 phases (Apr-Jun, Aug)

Best of both Best of Jan and Apr sessions Separate score per phase; one phase/year
Counselling Centralised via JoSAA Direct to college or state counselling
SPA Delhi Required (JEE Paper 2 only) Not accepted at SPA Delhi

Take JEE Paper 2 if:

  • β†’ SPA Delhi is your primary target
  • β†’ You want admission at NIT Calicut, NIT Trichy, or VNIT Nagpur
  • β†’ Your PCM is strong and you can handle JEE-level Mathematics
  • β†’ You want centralised counselling across multiple top institutions

Take NATA if:

  • β†’ CEPT University, JJ Mumbai, or state architecture colleges are your targets
  • β†’ You prefer a drawing-heavy exam over competitive Maths
  • β†’ You want access to 600+ colleges across India
  • β†’ You are not aiming for SPA Delhi specifically
Both is better: There is no rule against taking both JEE Paper 2 and NATA in the same year. Many serious B.Arch aspirants appear for both, which maximises college options. The exams are held at different times and have no scheduling conflict.

Frequently asked questions

What is JEE Main Paper 2 and who conducts it?
JEE Main Paper 2 is the national entrance exam for admission to 5-year B.Arch (Paper 2A) and 4-year B.Planning (Paper 2B) programmes at SPAs, NITs, IIITs, and other Centrally Funded Technical Institutions (CFTIs). It is conducted by the National Testing Agency (NTA) twice a year (January and April sessions). The official portal is jeemain.nta.nic.in.
What is the difference between Paper 2A and Paper 2B?
Paper 2A is for B.Arch admissions and includes a pen-and-paper drawing test (Part 3, 100 marks) in addition to Mathematics and Aptitude. Paper 2B is for B.Planning admissions and replaces the drawing test with a Planning-based MCQ section (25 questions, 100 marks). Both share the same Mathematics (Part 1) and Aptitude Test (Part 2). Students can appear for either or both in the same sitting.
What is the eligibility for JEE Main Paper 2 2026?
You must have passed 10+2 with Physics, Chemistry, and Mathematics. The minimum aggregate required is 75% (General and OBC-NCL categories) or 65% (SC, ST, and PwD categories). Alternatively, being in the top 20 percentile of your state board exam also qualifies. Students appearing in Class 12 board exams in 2026 may apply provisionally. There is no upper age limit set by NTA from 2022 onwards.
Which colleges accept JEE Main Paper 2 for B.Arch?
JEE Main Paper 2 scores are used for admission to architecture programmes at School of Planning and Architecture (SPA) Delhi, SPA Bhopal, SPA Vijayawada, NIT Calicut, NIT Trichy, VNIT Nagpur, NIT Hamirpur, MANIT Bhopal, Jamia Millia Islamia, and other NITs and CFTIs. Admissions to SPAs and NITs go through JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) counselling. Total seats across these institutions are approximately 1,000+.
Does SPA Delhi accept NATA scores?
No. School of Planning and Architecture, New Delhi (SPA Delhi) uses JEE Main Paper 2 scores exclusively for B.Arch admissions. NATA scores are not accepted at SPA Delhi under any circumstances. This is one of the most common misconceptions in B.Arch preparation. SPA Bhopal and SPA Vijayawada accept NATA alongside JEE Paper 2, but SPA Delhi is JEE-only. Verify at spa.ac.in before applying.
What is the JEE Paper 2 B.Arch cutoff for SPA Delhi?
SPA Delhi is the most selective JEE Paper 2 institution. For the General category, the closing rank in JoSAA counselling has typically been in the range of 200 to 600 depending on the year. For OBC-NCL, approximately 700 to 1,500. SC/ST cutoffs are significantly lower. Exact cutoffs change each year based on the number of qualified candidates. Check josaa.nic.in for previous-year cutoff data.
Can I take both JEE Paper 2A and Paper 2B in the same session?
Yes. Students can register for and appear in both Paper 2A (B.Arch) and Paper 2B (B.Planning) in the same JEE Main session. Parts 1 and 2 (Mathematics and Aptitude) are common to both papers and are taken once. Part 3 differs: Paper 2A requires a Drawing Test, while Paper 2B requires a Planning-based MCQ section. The fee is higher when registering for both.
How does JoSAA counselling work for B.Arch through JEE Paper 2?
JoSAA (Joint Seat Allocation Authority) manages centralised counselling for SPAs, NITs, IIITs, and CFTIs offering B.Arch through JEE Main Paper 2. After JEE results, eligible candidates register on josaa.nic.in, fill choice of colleges and programmes, and participate in multiple rounds of seat allotment. Document verification and fee payment are done online followed by reporting to the allotted institute. The process runs from June to July annually.
