MANIT Bhopal: Department of Architecture and Planning

MANIT Bhopal (Maulana Azad National Institute of Technology) is part of India's National Institutes of Technology system and is Central India's only NIT offering architecture programmes. Established in 1960, MANIT offers a five-year B.Arch programme with Council of Architecture approval and NAAC A accreditation. The college also offers M.Plan (Masters in Town and Regional Planning), creating an integrated architecture and planning education ecosystem.

MANIT's Department of Architecture and Planning is distinctive because it combines architectural design with urban and regional planning as integrated disciplines. Rather than treating planning as separate from architecture, students learn to understand how buildings, streets, and cities are designed together. The B.Arch curriculum at MANIT covers design studios, building technology, architectural history, professional practice, and planning-related specialisations. The M.Plan programme offers postgraduate study in urban design, regional planning, city development, and planning policy. Both programmes are designed to develop integrated thinking about architecture and urban development.

The faculty at MANIT bring experience from government planning bodies, architecture firms, urban development authorities, and heritage conservation organisations. Research interests span sustainable architecture, urban planning innovation, heritage conservation, and smart city development. The college's position as an NIT within Central India ensures strong connections to government planning and development bodies in the region.

Admission to B.Arch at MANIT is through JEE Main Paper 2 via JOSAA centralised counselling, with approximately 30 seats per year. This admissions pathway is distinct from NATA colleges and requires separate JEE Main preparation. Fees are approximately Rs 1.5L per year. Placement outcomes for MANIT graduates include government planning bodies, state urban development authorities, architecture firms across Central India, and private practice. Many graduates also pursue postgraduate study at MANIT M.Plan, IIT M.Plan, or related programmes.
