Chandigarh College of Architecture

Chandigarh College of Architecture was founded in 1961, just a decade after Le Corbusier and his team began the ambitious project of designing Chandigarh as India's first planned post-independence city. The timing was not coincidental: the college was established to train architects who could work on and sustain the new city and contribute to the broader project of building modern India.

The college operates in a unique pedagogical context. Chandigarh is, in important respects, the most intact large-scale application of modernist planning principles in the world. The Capitol Complex, comprising the Secretariat, High Court, and Assembly building, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The city's sector grid, open spaces, and standardised planning modules continue to function as Le Corbusier and Pierre Jeanneret intended. Students at CCA have the extraordinary advantage of learning architecture in a city that is itself a canonical work of 20th-century architecture and urban design.

The curriculum follows CoA guidelines and covers design across all five years, with building technology, structures, services, and professional practice integrated throughout. History and theory courses at CCA have a particular depth: students engage with the primary sources of the modernist project, including original drawings held in the Chandigarh Architecture Museum and the Capitol Complex archives. Design studios in the later years of the programme often engage with the city's contemporary challenges, including its expansion beyond the original planned sectors and the conservation pressures on its modernist heritage.

The college's government status and affiliation with Panjab University mean fees are set at minimal levels, making a CCA degree one of the most affordable NATA-qualifying architecture educations in north India. The city of Chandigarh also has a significant architecture practice community, with firms that specialise in heritage, residential, commercial, and urban design. Students can access internships and live project contacts within the city alongside opportunities in the wider Delhi-Punjab-Haryana triangle.

Graduates from CCA have pursued architecture practice across India, with notable alumni in government architecture services, heritage conservation, urban planning, and private practice. The college's small cohort size (approximately 40 seats) produces a close-knit graduate community.
