IIT Guwahati: Design Programme

IIT Guwahati's Design Programme started in 2004 and has grown into one of the larger design departments across UCEED-accepting institutions. With approximately 56 seats per year, the programme offers students a genuine IIT learning environment without the very high competition of the most sought-after campuses.

The curriculum integrates product design, interaction design, communication design, and craft-based practice. Students spend time in well-equipped studios and also engage with local craft communities and artisan networks in Assam and the wider Northeast region. This grounding in traditional material cultures gives the programme a distinctive character within the IIT design ecosystem.

Guwahati is a growing city and serves as the gateway to Northeast India. Design projects frequently engage with local industries, cultural organisations, and social enterprises. Students interested in design for social impact or craft-technology integration often find this environment particularly stimulating.

Internship placements draw from both the national design industry and local organisations. Graduates have joined product companies, consultancies, and startups, with many returning to practice in the Northeast.

Admission is through UCEED. After results, IIT Guwahati participates in JoSAA counselling. With around 56 seats, it typically has one of the higher seat counts among UCEED-participating IITs, and the General category closing rank has historically been around 80. The faculty at IIT Guwahati's design programme have developed particular depth in understanding Northeast Indian crafts as design resources. Several faculty members have documented and worked with artisan communities across Assam, Meghalaya, and Arunachal Pradesh. This regional focus gives the programme an academic character that complements its technical strengths in digital and product design. Research engagements include craft documentation projects and collaborations with cultural organisations in the Northeast.

Campus life at IIT Guwahati benefits from the institute's beautiful setting on the banks of the Brahmaputra river. Techniche, the annual technical and entrepreneurship festival, and Alcheringa, the cultural festival, are among the largest college events in Northeast India. Design students are active in both, contributing to visual identity, event design, and interactive experience projects. The campus has full residential facilities, and the close-knit community environment supports collaborative project work across departments.

Graduates from IIT Guwahati's Design Programme work across product companies, design consultancies, and digital agencies in India. A growing number have taken up UX design roles at technology firms in Bengaluru and Hyderabad. Some have pursued M.Des through CEED at other IITs.

Others have returned to practice in the Northeast, particularly in craft documentation, social design, and design for development in rural communities. The IIT brand ensures graduates are competitive for roles nationally alongside peers from other IIT design departments.
