IIT Kanpur: Department of Design

IIT Kanpur's Department of Design was established in 2015, making it one of the more recently founded design departments within the IIT system. What it brings to the table is direct access to IIT Kanpur's wider institutional strength: a consistently high NIRF overall ranking, a strong research culture, and a Design Innovation Centre that puts advanced prototyping and fabrication tools in the hands of design students.

The B.Des programme covers product design, interaction design, and design for sustainability. The sustainability focus is relatively unusual and reflects the department's interest in addressing systemic challenges through design, not just product-level aesthetics or usability.
