IIT Delhi: Department of Design

The Department of Design at IIT Delhi was established in 2008, drawing on the institute's strong engineering and research culture to create a design programme that takes technology seriously. It is one of the younger IIT design departments but has grown quickly, establishing a distinct identity in communication and industrial design.

The B.Des programme runs over four years and integrates design studio practice with coursework in design theory, human factors, materials, and manufacturing. Students benefit from access to IIT Delhi's broader campus resources, including fabrication labs, electronics workshops, and computational research groups. This makes the programme especially relevant for students interested in interaction design or technology-led product development.

New Delhi's position as India's capital and a major business hub means internship opportunities span design consultancies, government design bodies, media companies, and a growing tech startup scene. Graduates have joined companies in UX, product, and communication roles across the country and abroad.

The Department of Design places considerable emphasis on the relationship between design and technology. Students regularly collaborate with departments across campus on projects that bring design thinking to engineering and science problems.
