NID DAT 2026

NID DAT (NID Design Aptitude Test) is the gateway to design programmes at 23 NID campuses across India. Unlike UCEED or the NIFT entrance exam, NID conducts its own entrance process: a two-stage test (Prelims plus Studio Test) that specifically rewards creative originality, observation skill, and design thinking over academic performance.

Frequently asked questions about NID DAT

What is NID DAT?

NID Design Aptitude Test (NID DAT) is the national entrance exam for B.Des and M.Des programmes at 23 National Institute of Design campuses across India. It is conducted directly by NID Ahmedabad, not by any central body like NTA.

How many stages does NID DAT have?

NID DAT has two stages: Prelims and Mains. Prelims is a written test (MCQ and short answer) that shortlists candidates. Mains is a 2-day Studio Test where shortlisted students complete hands-on design exercises. Admission is based entirely on Mains performance.

What does NID DAT test?

NID DAT tests creativity, observation skills, drawing ability, visual thinking, design aptitude, and logical reasoning. No specific syllabus is prescribed. The exam is designed to find students with natural design curiosity rather than those who have memorised formulas.

What score do I need to get into NID Ahmedabad?

NID does not publish a rank cutoff. The Studio Test (Mains) is the primary selection filter. Only 10 to 15 percent of Prelims qualifiers are typically selected for the Ahmedabad campus. Portfolio quality, sketchbook observation, and originality of thought matter most at the Mains stage.

Can I prepare for NID DAT without coaching?

Yes. NID specifically advises against rote preparation. The exam rewards genuine curiosity and creative thinking. Most successful students build a strong sketchbook practice, stay observant of the world around them, and work through past papers available at nid.edu.
