IIITDM Kancheepuram: Design Programme

IIITDM Kancheepuram (Indian Institute of Information Technology, Design and Manufacturing) is a government institute of national importance established in 2007 under the Ministry of Education. The Kancheepuram institute was the first IIITDM established in South India and is one of three such institutes in the country alongside IIITDM Jabalpur and IIITDM Kurnool. The mission of all IIITDM institutes is to develop technology professionals with deep expertise in design and manufacturing, addressing India's need for engineers who understand the complete product development pipeline from concept through production.

Admission to the B.Des programme at IIITDM Kancheepuram is through UCEED, the same entrance examination used for admission to B.Des programmes at all IITs. The traditional silk weaving community, with its centuries-old expertise in double-warp Kanjeevaram silk and distinctive zari borders, offers design students an opportunity to engage with traditional making knowledge. Some IIITDM students explore the intersection of traditional craft and contemporary manufacturing as studio and research projects, examining how design can support craft communities while adapting to contemporary production contexts.
