National Institute of Design, Agartala

NID Agartala is a National Institute of Design campus in Agartala, the capital of Tripura in Northeast India. It is part of the NID national expansion under the National Design Policy and operates with Institute of National Importance status. Admission is through the NID Design Aptitude Test, the same two-stage process used for all NID campuses.

Tripura's distinctive craft traditions provide NID Agartala students with a rich research and practice context. The state is known for Tripuri handloom weaving, particularly Riha (worn by Tripuri women) and Rignai, which use complex traditional patterns with symbolic meanings. Cane and bamboo craft is widespread, with skilled artisans producing baskets, furniture, architectural elements, and everyday objects. The indigenous tribal communities of Tripura have art and craft traditions that represent significant material and cultural heritage for design research.

NID Agartala graduates receive the NID institutional credential and benefit from the national placement network. As one of the newer NID campuses, the institution is developing its industry relationships and campus facilities. Students gain the advantage of a smaller, more intimate learning environment alongside the credibility and placement infrastructure of the NID network.
