NID Ahmedabad: Gandhinagar Extension Campus

NID Gandhinagar is an extension campus of the National Institute of Design, Ahmedabad. It is located in Gandhinagar, Gujarat's administrative capital, approximately 30 kilometres from Ahmedabad. Understanding this campus requires clarity on one critical distinction: NID Gandhinagar is not an autonomous institute. It operates under NID Ahmedabad's administrative and academic framework and does not offer B.Des admission through NID DAT. Students applying through NID DAT for B.Des must target one of the five autonomous NID institutes: NID Ahmedabad, NID Andhra Pradesh, NID Haryana, NID Madhya Pradesh, and NID Assam.

The campus offers M.Des (Master of Design) programmes exclusively. With approximately 126 M.Des seats per year, NID Gandhinagar is one of the primary M.Des delivery points within the NID system. The specialisations available are: Animation Film Design, Ceramic and Glass Design, Exhibition Design, Film and Video Communication, Furniture and Interior Design, Graphic Design, and Product Design. M.Des at NID is a two-year, four-semester postgraduate programme intended for candidates who already hold a bachelor's degree in design, architecture, fine arts, engineering, or a related discipline.

Admission to NID M.Des at Gandhinagar follows the same two-stage NID DAT process used across all NID campuses. Candidates appear for the Prelims written test, which assesses visual aptitude, spatial reasoning, design knowledge, and creative thinking. Those who qualify are invited to appear for the Mains Studio Test, a two-day hands-on assessment of design ability, problem-solving, and execution. Campus and specialisation preferences are submitted after Mains results, and allocation is made based on merit and preference. No separate score or rank is published at any stage. Ahmedabad was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage City in 2017, and the old city's pols, step-wells, havelis, and the Sabarmati Riverfront provide architecture and design research material. The state's manufacturing economy, which includes textiles, chemicals, engineering goods, and ceramics, gives product and industrial design students access to real manufacturing environments for material exploration and industry projects.
