About the programme
The Industrial Design Centre at IIT Bombay was established in 1969, making it the oldest design programme within the IIT system and one of the first professionally oriented design schools in India. It was instrumental in establishing design as a discipline distinct from fine arts or engineering in the Indian academic context.
The B.Des curriculum runs across eight semesters and combines studio practice with design theory, research methods, and technology. Students work across all five specialisation tracks during their first two years before choosing a focus area in years three and four. The integration with IIT Bombay's engineering departments gives IDC students access to technical workshops, research labs, and prototyping facilities that most standalone design schools cannot match.
Internship placements from IDC span a wide range: product companies like Godrej and Tata, global consultancies, digital agencies, and startups across Mumbai and Bengaluru. Many graduates join companies like Microsoft, Google, Swiggy, and Zomato in UX and product design roles. Some go into design entrepreneurship or pursue M.Des through CEED.
Students who do well at IDC tend to be analytically strong alongside genuinely curious creatively. The environment is rigorous and the peer quality is high, which suits students who want to be challenged constantly.
Admission is through UCEED, conducted by IIT Bombay every January. After the UCEED merit list is published, IDC participates in JoSAA counselling. With approximately 30 B.Des seats across all categories, the closing rank for General category has historically been around 16. SC/ST/OBC candidates have separate cutoffs; check josaa.nic.in during the counselling window for current seat matrices.
