About NIFT Bhopal
NIFT Bhopal was established in 2008 and is located in Madhya Pradesh's capital, a city that sits at the geographic centre of India and serves as a gateway to one of the country's richest concentrations of textile and tribal craft traditions. Madhya Pradesh produces several of India's most distinctive handwoven fabrics, and the campus is positioned to use these traditions as a living resource for design education.
Chanderi silk and cotton, woven in the historic weaving town of Chanderi in the Ashoknagar district, are among India's most prized handloom textiles. Chanderi sarees and dress materials are known for their sheer texture, glossy transparency, and delicate gold zari work. Maheshwari fabric, from the town of Maheshwar on the Narmada river, was revived by Holkar queen Ahilya Bai and is woven in cotton-silk blends with distinctive striped borders. Bagh print, from the village of Bagh in the Dhar district, uses natural dyes and wooden blocks to produce geometric patterns on cotton and silk, and has been recognised with a Geographical Indication tag. Gond tribal art, practised by Gondi communities across MP, produces bold, intricate dot-and-line paintings that have crossed over into textile surface design and been collected internationally. Each of these traditions is within day-trip or overnight distance of Bhopal.
NIFT Bhopal offers 3 B.Des programmes: Fashion Design, Textile Design, and Fashion Communication. The B.Des intake is 100 seats per year, with a total campus enrolment of approximately 120 students. The smaller campus size means closer student-faculty relationships and more hands-on access to regional craft clusters for project work. As the only NIFT campus in Madhya Pradesh, it serves students from across central India who want government design education close to home.
The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 8 to 10 lakhs. Bhopal's cost of living is low by the standards of NIFT campuses in major metros, making the total education cost highly accessible. Admission follows the NIFT entrance exam process via NTA: GAT and CAT followed by a Situation Test for B.Des shortlisted candidates. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.
NIFT Bhopal graduates pursue careers in textile design, sustainable and handloom fashion, craft-based entrepreneurship, and the growing central Indian retail market. The Textile Design programme in particular benefits from deep engagement with Chanderi, Maheshwari, and Bagh print communities. Several graduates have gone on to work directly with craft clusters or establish their own labels rooted in MP's handloom traditions.
For students interested in handloom textiles, natural dye design, tribal craft traditions, and sustainable fashion practice, NIFT Bhopal offers a rare education: a government-quality design credential combined with direct access to some of India's most sophisticated weaving and craft communities. The campus's scale is modest, but the craft access it provides is genuinely exceptional.
