About NIFT Hyderabad
NIFT Hyderabad was established in 1995 and is located in Telangana's capital, one of India's fastest-growing metropolitan economies. The campus benefits from a dual context: Hyderabad's extraordinary craft heritage, which includes some of India's most technically complex textile and metalwork traditions, and the city's rapidly growing fashion retail and technology market. This combination of deep craft roots and modern commercial energy makes NIFT Hyderabad a campus that trains students for both heritage-rooted and contemporary fashion practice.
The Telangana region's craft traditions are globally recognised. Pochampally ikat, woven in the villages of Bhoodan Pochampally about 50 km from Hyderabad, uses a resist-dyeing technique to create geometric patterns in silk and cotton that are exported worldwide. Kalamkari, from the Srikalahasti and Machilipatnam regions, uses hand-drawn or block-printed natural dyes to produce narrative textiles rooted in mythological and folk themes. Bidri metalwork, from Bidar in Karnataka (close to Hyderabad), uses zinc-aluminium alloy inlaid with silver to produce jewellery and decorative objects of exceptional craftsmanship. Hyderabad itself is known as the Pearl City: the pearl trading market centred in the old city supplies jewellery design students with a living connection to one of the world's most distinctive luxury materials.
NIFT Hyderabad offers 6 programmes: B.Des in Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, and Accessory Design, B.F.Tech in Apparel Production, and M.Des. The B.Des intake is 160 seats per year. As the only NIFT campus in the two Telugu-speaking states, it is the natural destination for students from Andhra Pradesh and Telangana seeking government design education without relocating to Delhi or Mumbai.
The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 9 to 11 lakhs. Hyderabad's living costs are moderate, making the total cost of education including accommodation significantly lower than Delhi or Mumbai campuses. Admission follows the NIFT process: NTA conducts the GAT and CAT, with a Situation Test for B.Des shortlisted candidates. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.
NIFT Hyderabad graduates work across garment manufacturing (the city has a significant export cluster), fashion retail, jewellery design, textile product development, and the growing e-commerce market in South India. The Textile Design programme has a particularly strong regional rationale given the proximity to Pochampally ikat and Kalamkari craft clusters. The campus has placement relationships with major apparel groups and fashion retailers operating in Hyderabad.
For students from Telangana and Andhra Pradesh, and for those anywhere in India interested in ikat textiles, jewellery design, or the emerging Hyderabad fashion market, NIFT Hyderabad is a well-rounded campus with strong craft context and solid industry connections in a city whose fashion economy is growing faster than most.
