About NIFT Chennai
NIFT Chennai was established in 1995 and is located in Tamil Nadu's capital city, one of India's most important textile and leather export hubs. The campus draws on a regional craft and industry context that is unmatched in South India: Kanchipuram silk sarees, Chettinad cotton, temple textiles, and Chennai's globally significant leather goods and footwear export industry together create a learning environment that is practical, industry-close, and rooted in one of the world's oldest textile traditions.
Tamil Nadu's textile heritage is extraordinarily diverse. Kanchipuram, 75 km from Chennai, produces the finest silk sarees in India, woven with real zari (gold or silver thread) and sold across the country and internationally. Chettinad cotton, from the villages of the Sivaganga district, is known for its checked and striped patterns and natural dye use. Madurai cotton, Arni silk, and Dharmavaram silk are among the other weaving traditions within the state. For Textile Design students, this range of living craft traditions within day-trip distance is an extraordinary resource.
Chennai is also India's leather export capital. The city's Ambur-Ranipet leather cluster, Chromepet tanneries, and footwear export companies export millions of pairs of shoes and leather goods annually to European and American markets. Accessory Design students at NIFT Chennai have a natural pathway into this industry, with internship and placement opportunities at major leather goods and footwear manufacturers. The campus offers 6 programmes: B.Des in Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, and Accessory Design, B.F.Tech in Apparel Production, and M.Des. B.Des intake is 160 seats.
The 4-year B.Des programme fee ranges from Rs 9 to 11 lakhs. Chennai's living costs are moderate compared to Delhi or Mumbai, making it one of the more affordable established NIFT campuses in terms of total education cost including accommodation. Admission is through the NIFT entrance exam conducted by NTA: GAT and CAT followed by a Situation Test for B.Des shortlisted candidates. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.
NIFT Chennai graduates find strong placement across garment and textile export companies, leather goods manufacturers, and the South Indian fashion retail market. The campus has well-established industry ties with Apparel Export Promotion Council members operating out of Tamil Nadu, major leather goods exporters, and fashion brands with sourcing operations in the city. The Textile Design programme in particular benefits from academic collaborations with weavers and craft clusters in and around Chennai.
For students interested in textiles rooted in heritage weaving, leather goods and accessories, or South Indian fashion retail, NIFT Chennai offers an exceptional combination of craft proximity, industry access, and government-quality education. It is one of the strongest campuses in the network for Textile Design and Accessory Design specifically.
