About NIFT Gandhinagar

NIFT Gandhinagar was established in 1997 and is located in Gujarat's modern planned capital, adjacent to Ahmedabad, one of India's most important textile cities. Gujarat is arguably the single most textile-rich state in India: Patola silk double-ikat from Patan, Bandhani tie-dye from Jamnagar, Kutch embroidery from Bhuj, Ajrakh block printing from Dhamadka, and the industrial textile clusters of Surat and Ahmedabad together make the region an unparalleled education environment for any student of fabric, fibre, or fashion.

Patola silk is one of the world's most technically demanding textiles: a double-ikat where both warp and weft threads are resist-dyed before weaving, creating perfectly aligned geometric patterns. Only a handful of families in Patan maintain this 700-year-old tradition, and the resulting fabric commands among the highest prices of any Indian textile. Bandhani, the tie-dye tradition of Kutch and Saurashtra, produces vibrant polka-dot and geometric patterns in silk and cotton. Kutch embroidery from the Rabari, Ahir, and Banni communities is internationally collected and featured in global fashion collections. For Textile Design students, the density and quality of Gujarat's craft traditions is extraordinary.

The campus offers 7 programmes: B.Des in Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, and Accessory Design, B.F.Tech in Apparel Production, and postgraduate M.Des and MFM. The B.Des intake is 180 seats. The B.F.Tech Apparel Production programme is particularly relevant given Ahmedabad's long history as a textile mill hub and its continued importance as a centre for denim manufacturing. Arvind Mills, one of the world's largest denim producers, is based here.

The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 10 to 12 lakhs. Gandhinagar and Ahmedabad offer a cost of living that is lower than Delhi or Mumbai while still providing access to big-city infrastructure. Surat, two hours away, is India's synthetic and polyester fabric capital, and also the world's diamond processing centre, giving Accessory Design students proximity to one of the most specialised jewellery industries anywhere. Admission follows the NIFT entrance exam process via NTA. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.

NIFT Gandhinagar graduates work in textile manufacturing, craft-based fashion labels, export houses, and the growing sustainable fashion sector that draws on Gujarat's handloom and natural dye traditions. The Textile Design programme benefits from deep connections to Kutch embroidery clusters and the Kala Raksha craft organisation, which has been working with international fashion buyers and designers for decades.

NIFT Gandhinagar is an exceptional campus for students interested in textile design, fabric development, or accessory design with a strong craft foundation. Gujarat's combination of living heritage textile traditions and one of the world's largest industrial textile ecosystems gives this campus a dual-context education that few other NIFT locations can match.
