About NIFT Patna
NIFT Patna was established in 2011 and is located in Bihar's capital, a city at the heart of the Gangetic plain with access to one of India's most distinctive folk art and textile traditions. The campus draws on Madhubani painting and Sikki grass craft, two traditions that have transitioned from rural Bihar into international galleries and contemporary fashion, as key elements of its design education context.
Madhubani painting, also called Mithila painting, originates from the Mithila region of northern Bihar and uses natural dyes and pigments to produce intricate geometric and figurative compositions. The tradition was historically practised by women on the walls of homes during ceremonies and rituals; in the 1960s it was formalised on paper and canvas for commercial sale, and has since been collected internationally and incorporated into textile print design by major Indian and global fashion brands. The NIFT Patna campus is within reach of the Madhubani district, where master painters and weaving communities continue to practise and evolve the tradition. Sikki grass craft, using golden grass woven into baskets, figures, and jewellery, is another Bihar-specific art form with a growing design market.
NIFT Patna offers 3 B.Des programmes: Fashion Design, Textile Design, and Fashion Communication. The B.Des intake is approximately 90 seats per year. The campus is the only NIFT in Bihar, serving students from Bihar and Jharkhand who want government design education close to home. The smaller campus size creates a close mentorship environment and allows for intensive industry and craft engagement.
The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 8 to 10 lakhs. Patna's cost of living is very low by NIFT campus standards, making the total education cost one of the most affordable in the network. Admission follows the standard NIFT entrance exam via NTA: GAT, CAT, and Situation Test. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.
NIFT Patna graduates pursue careers in folk art-inspired fashion labels, textile surface design rooted in Mithila aesthetics, craft development organisations, and the growing fashion retail market in eastern India. Several alumni have worked with government craft bodies and NGOs to develop market pathways for Bihar's artisan communities, and others have built fashion labels that translate Madhubani motifs into print textiles for urban and international buyers.
For students interested in folk art-inspired design, Mithila painting, sustainable craft practice, or in contributing to Bihar's emerging design economy, NIFT Patna provides both a quality design education and a context that is genuinely unique. The campus's connection to Madhubani painting traditions offers a design language that is rare, internationally legible, and commercially viable.
