About NIFT Kolkata
NIFT Kolkata was established in 1995 and operates from West Bengal's capital, the cultural and intellectual centre of eastern India. The campus sits in a city with one of the richest textile traditions in the subcontinent: Bengali muslin, Kantha embroidery, Baluchari silk, Jamdani weave, and Tangail cotton are all either native to West Bengal or historically connected to the Bengali textile tradition. NIFT Kolkata uses this heritage as a living curriculum resource while also preparing students for the city's significant garment export industry.
Kantha embroidery is perhaps West Bengal's most internationally recognised textile craft. Originally a form of quilting using running stitch on recycled saris, it has evolved into a refined embroidery technique used in high-end fashion internationally. Baluchari silk, woven in Bishnupur, produces sarees with elaborate mythological narratives depicted in the border and pallu. Jamdani, listed by UNESCO as an Intangible Cultural Heritage, uses a supplementary weft technique to create translucent cotton fabric with geometric or floral motifs. For Textile Design students, Kolkata's proximity to these living traditions is a continuous resource for research, collaboration, and project work.
NIFT Kolkata offers 6 programmes: B.Des in Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, and Accessory Design, B.F.Tech in Apparel Production, and M.Des. The B.Des intake is 160 seats per year. The campus also serves as the primary NIFT option for students from the northeastern states, Odisha, Bihar, and Jharkhand, given its geographic position as eastern India's fashion education hub.
The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 9 to 11 lakhs. Kolkata's living costs are among the lowest of any major Indian city, making it one of the most affordable established NIFT campuses in terms of total education expenditure including accommodation and daily living. Admission follows the NIFT entrance exam process administered by NTA. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.
Kolkata's garment export industry is significant: the city is one of India's top five garment export centres, with clusters in Metiabruz and Rajabagan specialising in ethnic wear, knitwear, and woven fabrics for export. NIFT Kolkata graduates find placement in these export houses as well as in fashion retail, Kantha-focused design labels, jute goods manufacturing (Kolkata is India's jute processing capital), and the city's growing retail design sector. The campus also has a track record of placing graduates in northeast Indian fashion markets, which are growing rapidly.
For students from eastern and northeastern India, NIFT Kolkata is both the most accessible and the most contextually relevant NIFT campus. The combination of Bengal's extraordinary textile heritage, affordable living costs, and a substantial regional garment industry makes it a strong choice, particularly for students interested in Kantha-based fashion, textile research, or export-oriented garment design.
