About NIFT Bhubaneswar

NIFT Bhubaneswar was established in 1995 and operates from Odisha's capital, a city with access to one of India's most diverse and historically significant textile traditions. Odisha's handwoven fabrics are characterised by the complexity of their ikat technique, the richness of their natural dye colours, and a visual language rooted in tribal and temple art that makes them instantly recognisable. The campus uses this heritage as a living curriculum that very few other institutions in India can replicate.

Sambalpuri ikat is Odisha's most internationally recognised textile, woven in the districts of Sambalpur, Bargarh, Sonepur, and Bolangir using warp and weft ikat technique to create bold geometric patterns in silk and cotton. Berhampur silk, Nuapatna silk, and Kotpad cotton, naturally dyed using aal tree root, are other significant Odia textiles within reach of the campus. Pattachitra, the scroll painting tradition of Raghurajpur village, has crossed into textile print design and contemporary illustration practice. Tribal textiles from the Dongria Kondh, Bonda, and Saura communities add further depth to the regional context.

NIFT Bhubaneswar offers 5 programmes: B.Des in Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, and Accessory Design, and B.F.Tech in Apparel Production. The B.Des intake is 150 seats per year. The campus serves students from Odisha, Jharkhand, and Chhattisgarh who want NIFT education in the eastern region without relocating to Kolkata.

The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 9 to 11 lakhs. Bhubaneswar's living costs are among the most affordable of any NIFT campus in the established network, making total education cost significantly lower than Delhi or Mumbai campuses. Admission follows the NIFT process via NTA: GAT, CAT, and Situation Test. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.

NIFT Bhubaneswar graduates work in ikat-focused fashion labels, textile export companies, handloom development organisations, and the eastern India fashion retail market. The campus has collaborative relationships with the Odisha State Handloom Weavers Co-operative Society and with craft clusters in the Sambalpur and Nuapatna regions. Several alumni have established sustainable fashion labels that directly work with Odia weavers, drawing attention to Sambalpuri and Kotpad textiles internationally.

For students passionate about ikat weaving, natural dyes, tribal craft, and sustainable handloom practice, NIFT Bhubaneswar is one of the most contextually compelling campuses in the entire NIFT network. The access to living weaving communities producing some of India's finest fabrics, combined with affordable education costs, makes it a strong and underrated choice.
