NIFT Coimbatore was established in 2015 and is located in Tamil Nadu's second-largest city, widely referred to as the Manchester of the South. Coimbatore is one of India's most important textile manufacturing centres: its spinning mills produce a significant share of India's yarn output, its weaving clusters supply fabric to garment manufacturers across the country, and its proximity to Tirupur, 50 km away, places it next to one of the world's largest knitwear export hubs. For a design student, studying here means studying design in an environment where textile and apparel production is the primary economic activity.

Tirupur, often called the Knitwear Capital of India, exports Rs 30,000 crore worth of cotton knitwear annually, supplying brands including H&M, Zara, Gap, Primark, and dozens of others. The Coimbatore-Tirupur belt also has significant presence in technical textiles, geotextiles, and industrial fabrics, which are growing sectors globally. This means NIFT Coimbatore's B.F.Tech Apparel Production programme has a direct, live industry context that students can engage with from semester one. Internship and project placements in spinning mills, fabric processors, and garment manufacturers are a natural pipeline from the campus.

NIFT Coimbatore offers 4 programmes: B.Des in Fashion Design and Textile Design, B.F.Tech in Apparel Production, and a Fashion Communication programme. The B.Des intake is 80 seats per year. The smaller campus size provides close mentorship and intensive industry engagement. The campus is the only NIFT in the western Tamil Nadu region and draws students from Coimbatore, Salem, Tirupur, and the wider Kongu Nadu region.

The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 7 to 9 lakhs. Coimbatore's cost of living is moderate, significantly lower than Chennai, and the city has good connectivity to Bangalore and other major metros. Admission follows the NIFT entrance exam process via NTA: GAT, CAT, and Situation Test for B.Des candidates. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.

NIFT Coimbatore graduates are placed in garment manufacturing companies, textile mills, export houses in the Tirupur cluster, technical textile companies, and fashion brands that source from the Coimbatore-Tirupur belt.
