About NIFT Kangra
NIFT Kangra was established in 2010 and is located in the Kangra Valley of Himachal Pradesh, set against the backdrop of the Dhauladhar mountain range. It is the only NIFT campus situated in a hill environment, and the campus's setting in one of India's most scenic and culturally rich mountain regions defines a distinctive education context. Himachal Pradesh's craft traditions, from Kullu hand-woven shawls to Chamba rumal embroidery to Kangra miniature painting, provide students with a design language rooted in mountain culture and natural environments.
Kullu shawls, woven on traditional frame looms in the Kullu Valley using wool, angora, and pashmina-blend yarns, are among Himachal Pradesh's most exported craft products. Their geometric patterns in rich earth tones and bright accent colours have been adopted by mainstream Indian and international fashion. Chamba rumal, a double-sided embroidery from the Chamba district using silk thread on muslin, depicts scenes from epics and folk tales in a distinctive style that has been collected internationally. Kangra miniature painting, the Pahari art tradition from which the campus's home district takes much of its cultural identity, is one of India's most refined court painting traditions, known for its delicate brushwork and natural colour palette derived from minerals and plants.
NIFT Kangra offers 3 B.Des programmes: Fashion Design, Textile Design, and Fashion Communication. The B.Des intake is approximately 80 seats per year. The campus is the primary NIFT option for students from Himachal Pradesh, Jammu, and the adjacent hill districts of Uttarakhand. Its mountain location and smaller campus size create a focused studio environment that is quieter and more contemplative than the larger metro campuses.
The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 7 to 9 lakhs, among the lower end of the NIFT spectrum. Kangra's cost of living is modest, and the campus offers an environment that many students find conducive to creative work. Admission follows the standard NIFT entrance exam via NTA: GAT, CAT, and Situation Test. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.
NIFT Kangra graduates work in Kullu shawl and Himachali craft-based fashion labels, sustainable wool and natural fibre design, craft export companies, and hill tourism-oriented retail design. Several alumni have established labels that position Kullu weaving and Chamba embroidery for urban Indian and international buyers. The campus has connections with the Himachal Pradesh government's handloom and handicraft development bodies.
For students who want a design education in a mountain environment with access to Himachal Pradesh's extraordinary wool and embroidery traditions, NIFT Kangra is a genuinely distinctive choice. The combination of the Pahari craft context, affordable education, and a setting that inspires a certain kind of contemplative design practice makes it unlike any other NIFT campus.
