About NIFT Kannur
NIFT Kannur was established in 2010 and is located in the Malabar region of northern Kerala, historically one of India's most important centres of handloom weaving and coastal craft. Kannur District is often called the handloom capital of Kerala: the city and its surrounding villages sustain dozens of weaving cooperatives and thousands of individual weavers producing cotton and silk textiles for both domestic and export markets. The campus draws on this living industry as a practical education resource, giving students direct access to weavers, looms, and fabric traditions that are rare elsewhere in South India.
Kerala's distinctive textile tradition centres on cotton handloom in shades of cream and white with golden kasavu (zari) borders, used in traditional ceremonial wear. Kasavu sarees and mundum-neriyathum are Kerala's ceremonial dress, worn at Onam and at weddings, and remain a significant part of both domestic demand and export-oriented production. The Balaramapuram, Kuthampully, and Chendamangalam weaving clusters, within a few hours of Kannur, produce these textiles with techniques passed down across generations. Kannur itself is known for its kaithari (thick cotton) handlooms and for denim-weight cotton exports. Coir (coconut fibre) weaving from the backwater regions of Kerala produces mats, furniture fabrics, and composite materials that have found architectural and interior design applications globally.
NIFT Kannur offers 3 B.Des programmes: Fashion Design, Textile Design, and Fashion Communication. The B.Des intake is 90 seats per year. The campus serves students from Kerala and the wider South Indian region who want NIFT education in a context that directly reflects Kerala's own strong textile industry. The Textile Design programme is particularly relevant given the depth of the regional weaving community.
The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 8 to 10 lakhs. Kannur's cost of living is modest by NIFT campus standards. Kerala's high literacy rate and well-developed healthcare and transport infrastructure make it a comfortable location for students from across India. Admission follows the NIFT entrance exam process via NTA: GAT, CAT, and Situation Test. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.
NIFT Kannur graduates work in handloom development organisations, kasavu-focused fashion labels, coir and natural fibre product design, and the growing fashion retail market in Kerala and the Gulf, which has a large Malayali diaspora with strong purchasing power in Indian ethnic wear. The campus has connections with handloom cooperatives and weavers in the Kannur region, providing project collaboration and internship pathways rooted in the local industry.
For students interested in handloom textiles, natural fibre design, or the intersection of Kerala's weaving traditions with contemporary fashion practice, NIFT Kannur provides an education that is grounded in a living, working textile industry. Few NIFT campuses can match the direct industry proximity that Kannur offers for students specialising in handloom fabric and sustainable textile design.
