About NIFT Panchkula

NIFT Panchkula was established in 1995 and is located in the city of Panchkula in Haryana, forming part of the Chandigarh tricity metropolitan area alongside Chandigarh and Mohali. The campus benefits from Chandigarh's status as a well-planned, high-quality-of-life city and from the broader Punjab-Haryana region's substantial presence in India's apparel manufacturing industry. Ludhiana, 100 km away, is India's knitwear and hosiery capital, making this one of the most industry-proximate campuses in the NIFT network for students interested in garment production and textile technology.

Punjab and Haryana have strong textile and embroidery traditions. Phulkari, meaning "flower work," is a form of embroidery worked on coarse cotton cloth using silk thread in vibrant geometric and floral patterns. Originally created as dowry items and gifts within Punjab's communities, Phulkari and its more elaborate form, Bagh, where the entire surface is covered in embroidery, have been revived and repositioned in contemporary fashion. Chamba rumal, from the adjacent Himachal hills, and the weaving clusters of Haryana's handloom cooperatives add further layers to the regional craft context.

NIFT Panchkula offers 8 programmes, one of the broadest ranges in the network: B.Des in Fashion Design, Fashion Communication, Textile Design, Accessory Design, Leather Design, and Knitwear Design, B.F.Tech in Apparel Production, and postgraduate MFM. The B.Des intake is 180 seats per year. The Knitwear Design programme is particularly strategically placed given Ludhiana's massive knitwear industry, and B.F.Tech feeds directly into Punjab's garment manufacturing sector.

The 4-year B.Des fee ranges from Rs 10 to 12 lakhs. Panchkula and Chandigarh offer a high quality of life relative to cost: the city is clean, well-planned, and has good public infrastructure. Living costs are moderate compared to Delhi. Admission follows the standard NIFT entrance exam process via NTA. Applications open in November at exams.nta.nic.in/niftee.

NIFT Panchkula graduates have strong placement options in Ludhiana's knitwear and hosiery industry, which exports to Europe and North America and employs thousands of designers and production managers. Fashion Design and Fashion Communication graduates find opportunities in the growing fashion retail market of the Chandigarh tricity, which has one of the highest per-capita retail spending levels in India. Leather Design graduates have pathways into the northern footwear industry centred in Agra and Kanpur.

For students interested in knitwear design, Phulkari embroidery, apparel production, or in studying at a well-established NIFT campus in a high-quality-of-life city with strong industry proximity, NIFT Panchkula is an underrated option. Its 8-programme range is matched only by Delhi and Mumbai in the NIFT network, making it the most programme-diverse campus outside the two metro flagships.
