NID DAT does not work like most Indian entrance exams. There is no merit rank published, no category-wise rank cutoff to look up, and no rank-to-college predictor that can give you a definitive answer. Understanding how seats and selectivity actually work saves you from coaching centre myths and positions your preparation correctly.
Why NID does not publish rank cutoffs
Warning: fabricated cutoff data circulates widely
Many coaching centres and aggregator websites publish tables with "NID Ahmedabad cutoff rank: 47" or "NID Bhopal minimum score: 68/100". These figures are entirely fabricated. NID does not release any numerical score or rank for Studio Test performance. Any such table is misinformation that can mislead your preparation.
The reason no cutoff is published is structural. NID DAT Prelims shortlists candidates using a written test with a numerical score. This score is not published or used for final admission. The Studio Test (Mains) is a 2-day hands-on design exercise evaluated subjectively by a panel of NID faculty. The evaluation covers creative thinking, problem-solving, drawing ability, and design sensibility. There is no numerical score from the Studio Test that can be "cut off". It is a holistic assessment.
What does exist is a merit order produced after Studio Test evaluation. This merit order determines who gets admitted and to which campus and specialisation. But neither the Studio Test score nor the merit rank is communicated to candidates in numerical form.
What you can actually track

How selective is NID DAT? Stage-by-stage
Understanding the funnel helps you calibrate where effort is needed. NID DAT has two very different stages: Prelims (which can be prepared for systematically) and the Studio Test (which reflects deeper creative development).
Annual applicants for NID DAT Prelims (B.Des and M.Des combined). Figure from admissions.nid.edu and NID Ahmedabad communications.
Approximately 15-20% of Prelims applicants are shortlisted for the Studio Test. Exact number varies by year and is announced with Prelims results.
Total across all 7 NID entities. Of the ~2,000-3,000 who attend the Studio Test, approximately 750-800 are ultimately admitted across all campuses and specialisations.
NID Ahmedabad fills first on the merit list. Only the top ~125 candidates in merit order who have Ahmedabad as a preference get Ahmedabad B.Des. The implied selection rate from Prelims is under 1% for Ahmedabad specifically.
What this means for your preparation
Prelims is necessary but not sufficient. Passing Prelims is a filter, not an achievement that guarantees admission. The real selection happens at the Studio Test. Most Prelims qualifiers do not get admitted to any NID campus. This is why sketchbook practice, genuine design curiosity, and observation habits matter far more than test-taking strategy in the long run.
How campus and specialisation allocation works
After Studio Test results, NID produces a merit list. Admission and campus allocation then works as follows:
NID prepares a single merit list based on Studio Test performance. All B.Des applicants are on one list; all M.Des applicants are on a separate list. There is no campus-specific merit list.
Candidates on the merit list are called for counselling and declare their campus and specialisation preferences in order of priority. You may list multiple campuses and specialisations.
Starting with the top-ranked candidate, seats at each campus and specialisation are filled according to declared preference and availability. A candidate gets their highest-ranked preference that still has a vacant seat.
The reservation policy (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/EWS/PwD) applies to each campus separately. Reserved seats are filled from the merit list of candidates in the respective category. If reserved seats are not filled, they are carried forward as per government rules.
Because Ahmedabad is the most preferred campus, its seats fill with the highest-ranked candidates who listed it as a preference. A candidate ranked, say, 200th on the merit list is unlikely to receive Ahmedabad if it has only 125 seats and higher-ranked candidates preferred it.
Which specialisations are available at which campus
Not all specialisations are available at every campus. NID Ahmedabad has the widest range. The 4 newer autonomous institutes (AP, Haryana, MP, Assam) all offer the same 3 specialisations.
| Specialisation | Ahmedabad | AP | Haryana | MP | Assam |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Industrial / Product Design | โ | โ | โ | โ | โ |

Frequently asked questions
Does NID publish merit rank cutoffs?
No. NID does not publish a numerical merit rank or cutoff score for any campus or specialisation. The entire admission decision is based on the Studio Test (Mains) performance, which is evaluated subjectively by a panel of NID faculty. There is no rank list in the JOSAA sense. Any website or coaching centre that claims to publish "NID Ahmedabad cutoff rank" or "minimum score to get NID Ahmedabad" is presenting fabricated data.
How many B.Des seats are there at NID?
There are approximately 425 B.Des seats across the 5 autonomous NID institutes: NID Ahmedabad (~125 seats including overseas supernumerary), NID Andhra Pradesh (~75), NID Haryana (~75), NID Madhya Pradesh (~75), and NID Assam (~75). These figures include all categories (General, EWS, SC, ST, OBC-NCL, PwD) and overseas supernumerary seats. Verify exact seat matrices on admissions.nid.edu.
How many M.Des seats are there at NID?
There are approximately 347 M.Des seats across three NID entities: NID Ahmedabad main campus (~126), NID Gandhinagar extension campus (~126), and NID Bengaluru extension campus (~95). M.Des admission is conducted through the same NID DAT process. These figures include all categories and are approximate.
How competitive is NID Ahmedabad B.Des?
NID Ahmedabad is the most competitive NID campus. Approximately 15,000 candidates appear for Prelims annually. Of these, typically 2,000-3,000 are shortlisted for the Studio Test (roughly 15-20%). Of those who appear for the Studio Test, approximately 125 candidates (or fewer for specific specialisations) are selected for Ahmedabad. This makes the final selection rate roughly 1% of Prelims applicants for Ahmedabad specifically.
How does campus allocation work after the Studio Test?
After the Studio Test (Mains), NID prepares a merit list. Candidates on this merit list are called for counselling where they declare campus and specialisation preferences. Allocation is made in merit order: the top-ranked candidates get their first-choice campus and specialisation, and so on. If a preferred campus/specialisation fills up, the candidate is moved to their next declared preference. There is no separate exam for different campuses. All campus preferences are fulfilled from one merit list.
Is getting into newer NID campuses (MP, Haryana, Assam) easier than NID Ahmedabad?
Yes, relatively. The same merit list is used for all campuses, but since NID Ahmedabad has only ~125 seats and is the most in-demand, it fills first. Candidates lower on the merit list are allocated to their next-preferred campus among the newer autonomous NIDs. However, a candidate must still clear Prelims and perform well enough in the Studio Test to appear on the merit list at all, which itself requires significant preparation.
