NID DAT eligibility for B.Des and M.Des programmes has specific requirements around educational qualification, age limits, and category-based relaxations. Understanding these criteria before applying saves time and prevents eligibility errors at the admission stage.
Source: All eligibility data on this page is sourced from the official NID admissions portal at admissions.nid.edu. Dates and age cut-offs shift by one year each cycle. Always cross-check the official notification before applying.
B.Des eligibility criteria
The Bachelor of Design (B.Des) programme at the 5 autonomous NID institutes is a 4-year undergraduate degree. Admission is through NID DAT Prelims followed by the Studio Test (Mains). Here are the full eligibility requirements.
Age limit (B.Des)
NID DAT B.Des has a maximum age limit. There is no minimum age requirement. The cut-off date is 1 July of the application year. These are the age criteria from the 2026 cycle (for admission in 2026). The dates advance by exactly one year for the 2027 cycle.
| Category | Born on or after (2026 cycle) | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | 1 July 2003 | None |
| SC / ST / OBC-NCL | 1 July 2000 | 3 years |
| PwD (Persons with Disability) | 1 July 1998 | 5 years |

M.Des eligibility criteria
The Master of Design (M.Des) programme at NID Ahmedabad and its two extension campuses (Gandhinagar and Bengaluru) is a 2-year postgraduate degree. M.Des is significantly more accessible in terms of age limit and disciplinary background than B.Des.
Age limit (M.Des)
M.Des has a more generous age limit than B.Des, reflecting that it is a postgraduate programme. Working professionals and career changers up to their early 30s are typically within the M.Des age window.
| Category | Born on or after (2026 cycle) | Relaxation |
|---|---|---|
| General / EWS | 1 July 1992 | None |
| SC / ST / OBC-NCL | 1 July 1989 | 3 years |
| PwD (Persons with Disability) | 1 July 1987 | 5 years |

Category-wise relaxations
NID follows the Government of India's reservation policy. Category-based relaxations apply to age limits (as shown in the tables above). Seat reservation percentages in the B.Des programmes follow the standard Central Government pattern.
No age relaxation. Standard competition for unreserved and EWS seats.
3-year age relaxation. SC seats reserved as per Government of India norms.
3-year age relaxation. ST seats reserved as per Government of India norms.
3-year age relaxation. OBC seats reserved. OBC Creamy Layer (income above Rs 8 lakh per year) is NOT eligible for OBC category.
5-year age relaxation. Applies across all categories. Physical accessibility of studio test venue should be verified.
Certificate requirement: Category certificates (SC/ST/OBC-NCL/PwD) must be issued by a competent authority (Tehsildar, SDM, or equivalent). OBC-NCL certificates must be issued within the validity period specified in the NID notification (typically within the year of application). Upload scanned copies at the time of application. Original certificates are verified at the admission stage.
Dropper policy and number of attempts
NID DAT does not restrict the number of times a candidate can apply. There is no concept of a "maximum attempts" limit. The only binding constraint is the age limit.
You can apply every year until you exceed the maximum age cut-off. Each application is independent. A previous failure has no bearing on future eligibility.
Taking one or two years after Class 12 to prepare for NID DAT is a recognised and common path. NID does not penalise gap years in its eligibility criteria.
The only hard limit is the age cut-off. If you are born before the category-specific cut-off date, you are not eligible regardless of qualification. Calculate your eligibility window carefully before planning a multi-year preparation strategy.
Application process
NID DAT applications are submitted online at admissions.nid.edu. The application is a single form that covers both Prelims registration and programme preference declaration.
Create an account at admissions.nid.edu using your email address. You will receive a verification email. Complete your profile with personal details, educational background, and category information.
Complete the application form with your educational qualifications, contact information, and category. Declare your programme choice (B.Des or M.Des) and campus/specialisation preferences. Read each field carefully as errors in category or programme selection cannot be changed after submission.
You will need to upload a recent passport-size photograph, your signature, and category certificate (if applicable). Documents should be in JPEG or PDF format within the size limits specified. Check the portal for exact specifications.
Application fee payment is online via debit card, credit card, or net banking. Verify the current fee on admissions.nid.edu as it may vary by year and category. The fee is non-refundable once paid.
The admit card for Prelims is released approximately 3-4 weeks before the exam date. Download and verify all details including your exam centre, date, and time. Carry a printed copy to the exam centre along with a valid photo ID.
Prelims is a written test (MCQ and short answer format) held at test centres across India. Your performance determines whether you are shortlisted for the Studio Test. Results are typically declared within 4-6 weeks of Prelims.
Shortlisted candidates attend the 2-day Studio Test at NID Ahmedabad. Campus and specialisation allocation is based entirely on Mains performance. There is no separate process for different campus preferences.

Frequently asked questions
What is the age limit for NID DAT B.Des 2027?
For B.Des, the general category age limit requires candidates to be born on or after 1 July 2003 (for the 2026 cycle). SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates get a 3-year relaxation (born on or after 1 July 2000). PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation (born on or after 1 July 1998). Always verify the exact cut-off date on admissions.nid.edu as it advances by one year each application cycle.
What is the age limit for NID DAT M.Des 2027?
For M.Des, general category candidates must be born on or after 1 July 1992 (for the 2026 cycle). SC/ST/OBC-NCL candidates get a 3-year relaxation (born on or after 1 July 1989). PwD candidates get a 5-year relaxation (born on or after 1 July 1987). The M.Des age limit is more flexible than B.Des, making NID M.Des accessible to working professionals.
What educational qualification is required for NID DAT B.Des?
For B.Des: candidates must have passed Class 12 (10+2) from a recognised board in any stream (Science, Commerce, or Arts), OR hold an AICTE-approved 10+3 diploma (3 years after Class 10). There is no minimum percentage requirement specified in the official NID DAT notification. Students appearing in Class 12 exams in the same academic year are also eligible to apply.
What educational qualification is required for NID DAT M.Des?
For M.Des: candidates must hold a Bachelor's degree of minimum 3 or 4 years duration from a recognised university in any discipline. This includes B.Des, B.Tech, B.Arch, B.Sc, B.Com, B.A, BFA, B.Pharm, and any other undergraduate programme. Final-year degree students are eligible to apply but must produce their degree certificate at the time of admission.
Can droppers apply for NID DAT?
Yes. Droppers are eligible for NID DAT as long as they meet the educational qualification (Class 12 pass for B.Des; Bachelor's degree for M.Des) and fall within the age limit. There is no restriction on the number of attempts. Many NID students have prepared for 1-2 years before qualifying. This is not unusual for the flagship Ahmedabad campus.
Can students from any stream (Science, Arts, Commerce) apply for NID DAT B.Des?
Yes. NID DAT B.Des is open to Class 12 pass students from any stream: Science, Commerce, Humanities/Arts, or Fine Arts. There is no stream restriction. This is different from UCEED (which also has no stream restriction) and NATA (where architecture-related subjects are sometimes preferred). NID looks for design aptitude, not academic stream.
Is there a minimum percentage for NID DAT eligibility?
The official NID DAT notification does not specify a minimum percentage at the 12th level for B.Des eligibility. For M.Des, a Bachelor's degree is required but no minimum aggregate percentage is specified in the eligibility criteria (unlike CEED, which requires 55%). Always verify the latest notification at admissions.nid.edu before applying.
How many times can I attempt NID DAT?
There is no limit on the number of NID DAT attempts. You can apply every year until you exceed the age limit. Given the competitive nature of NID Ahmedabad (where fewer than 10-15% of Studio Test participants are selected), multiple attempts are common. Each attempt is a fresh application with no cumulative penalty.
