NIFT 2027 registration overview

NIFT registration is the starting point of the National Institute of Fashion Technology entrance process. Applications are conducted online through the National Test Agency (NTA) portal, which administers NIFT exams on behalf of the institute. One registration covers all 20 NIFT campuses: you do not need to apply separately for each campus.

The NIFT 2027 registration window is expected to open in October or November 2026, approximately 3-4 months before the February 2027 exam. The official dates are announced on nift.ac.in and on the NTA website. This guide explains the full registration process, fee structure, required documents, and critical mistakes to avoid.

Step-by-step NIFT registration process

Step 1: Go to nift.ac.in and access the application portal

When the registration window opens, visit nift.ac.in and follow the "Apply Online" or "Registration" link. This redirects you to the NTA application portal. Alternatively, go directly to exams.nta.ac.in and search for the NIFT 2027 application.

Do not use any other website for NIFT applications. Third-party portals that claim to facilitate NIFT registration are not official and should be avoided.

Step 2: Create your account

Click "New Registration" and enter your email address and mobile number. An OTP is sent to both for verification. After verification, you receive your login credentials. Store your application login ID and password securely. You will need them for every subsequent step: admit card download, result checking, and counselling registration.

Use an email address you actively check. All official NIFT communications (admit card notification, result, counselling links) are sent to this address.

Step 3: Fill in personal details

Enter your personal information exactly as it appears on official documents. Your name must match your Class 10 certificate. Date of birth must match your birth certificate or Class 10 record. Any mismatch creates problems during document verification at the time of admission.

Enter your category (General, OBC-NCL, EWS, SC, ST, or PwD) correctly. The category you declare determines the fee you pay and the reservation you receive. Incorrect category declaration can lead to disqualification.

For appearing candidates (currently in Class 12), select your expected year of passing and your board. You will need to produce your actual marksheet at the time of admission if selected.

Step 4: Enter academic details

Select your Class 12 (or equivalent) board, year of passing or year of appearing, stream, and whether you have a percentage or grade. If you are a postgraduate programme applicant, enter your graduation degree details.

Step 5: Choose your programme

Select the programme you are applying for: B.Des, B.FTech, M.Des, MFM, or M.FTech. This is one of the most critical choices in the application because it determines:

Which tests you sit for (GAT only vs GAT + CAT) What your merit calculation formula will be What the Situation Test and interview requirements are

If you want to be considered for both B.Des (requiring CAT) and B.FTech (requiring GAT only), you must apply for B.Des and take both tests. You cannot add programme choices after submission.

Step 6: Select exam city preferences

Select 3 to 4 exam cities in order of preference. NIFT GAT and CAT are conducted at centres across India. City allocation is done by NTA based on seat availability and proximity to your address. Your actual exam centre is confirmed on your admit card, typically 2-3 weeks before the exam.

Choose cities geographically close to you to minimise travel time, cost, and stress on exam day. Do not select cities you cannot easily reach.

Step 7: Upload photograph and signature

Your photograph must meet strict NTA format requirements. Upload a recent photograph: passport size (3.5cm x 4.5cm or as specified), JPEG format, 10 KB to 200 KB, white or off-white background, face clearly visible without sunglasses or head covering (except for religious reasons), taken within the last 6 months.

Your signature must be in JPEG format, on white paper, signed in blue or black ink. Signatures in block capitals or typed letters are not accepted. Review the official image upload guidelines in the NIFT notification bulletin before uploading.

Step 8: Pay the fee and submit

After completing all sections, review your entire application for errors. Correct any mistakes before submitting. Once you click Submit, no further edits are possible until the correction window opens.

After submission, pay the application fee online. After successful payment, download and save the application confirmation page. This is your proof of registration.

Documents required at registration

Prepare these documents in the specified digital formats before starting your application. Having them ready speeds up the process and reduces errors.

Passport-size photograph (JPEG, 10-200 KB, white background, recent) Signature scan (JPEG, 4-30 KB, on white paper in blue or black ink) Class 10 marksheet or certificate (for date of birth proof; PDF or JPEG, scanned clearly) Class 12 marksheet (for passed candidates) or appearing letter from school on letterhead (for Class 12 appearing candidates) For postgraduate applicants: graduation degree certificate or final year appearing certificate Category certificate, if applicable: OBC-NCL (current year), EWS (current financial year), SC, ST, or PwD certificate Valid identity proof (Aadhaar card, passport, or driving licence): required at the exam centre on exam day

Application correction window

NTA provides a correction window of 3-5 days after registration closes. During this period, candidates can correct:

  • Personal details (name, date of birth, gender)
  • Academic details (board, year, stream)
  • Category (with supporting certificate)
  • Photograph and signature (if format errors were flagged)
  • Exam city preference

What you generally cannot change: programme choice, nationality, and qualifying exam type. After the correction window closes, no further changes are possible under any circumstances.

Make use of the correction window to review your application carefully. Even minor errors in name spelling or date of birth can create verification problems during admission.

Admit card download

NIFT admit cards are available for download 2-3 weeks before the exam, typically in January for the February exam. Log in to the NTA-NIFT portal using your application number and date of birth. Download and print your admit card.

Your admit card will show: your name, application number, exam centre name and address, exam date and time, and reporting time. Check every detail carefully.

You must carry the admit card to the exam centre. Without it, you may not be allowed to sit the exam. Also carry a valid government photo ID: Aadhaar, passport, PAN card, or driving licence. The name on the ID must match the name on your admit card.

Common registration mistakes to avoid

Starting the application on the last day is the most avoidable mistake. Technical issues, server slowdowns, and payment gateway failures are common near the deadline. Begin registration at least 2 weeks before the closing date.

Uploading a photograph that does not meet the format requirements causes application rejection or hold. Use a professional photographer who can provide a correctly sized, white-background photograph in digital format.

Entering the wrong category is a serious error. Claiming OBC-NCL reservation without a valid, current OBC-NCL certificate, or failing to claim reservation you are entitled to, both create problems. Verify your category status before applying.

Using the same login for multiple applications is not permitted. Each applicant must create their own unique account. If you create multiple accounts accidentally, contact NTA immediately.

What happens after registration?

After submitting your NIFT application, focus shifts to preparation. The exam is in February, giving you 3-4 months from the October/November registration window.

For B.Des candidates, prepare for both GAT and CAT. The NIFT Syllabus 2027 page contains a complete breakdown of all sections and what to study. CAT preparation (drawing, design ability, colour composition) typically requires 3-4 months of dedicated practice.

For B.FTech candidates, focus entirely on GAT. The syllabus covers English, quantitative ability, general knowledge, and logical reasoning.

Once results are declared (February/March), shortlisted B.Des candidates proceed to the Situation Test. All candidates can then check their Combined Merit Rank and use it to estimate college options. The NIFT Cutoffs 2025 page provides campus-wise closing rank data to help you plan your counselling choices.
