NIFT conducts two separate tests for B.Des admission: the GAT (General Aptitude Test) which is a computer-based exam with standardised answer keys, and the CAT (Creativity Assessment Test) which is conducted in person with tasks revealed on exam day. NTA has conducted NIFT exams since 2020. GAT answer keys are released within two weeks of the exam. CAT prompts are not officially published as downloadable papers, but student reports and past year memories provide insight into the question types and themes. This page links to official NIFT and NTA resources.
Papers by year
NIFT has run annually in February/March cycle. Since 2020, NTA conducts the GAT portion. CAT is administered in-person. Answer keys for GAT are released by NTA within 2-3 weeks of the exam date.

GAT: sections and preparation strategy
The General Aptitude Test (GAT) covers five sections. Unlike competitive exams like JEE, NIFT GAT is designed to assess overall intellectual capability and communication skills, not deep technical knowledge. All content is at Class 11-12 NCERT level.
Quantitative Ability
Algebra, trigonometry, coordinate geometry, calculus, statistics. Class 11-12 NCERT level.
Communication Ability
English language skills, reading comprehension, grammar, vocabulary.
English Comprehension
Passage-based comprehension, critical reading, inference.
Analytical and Logical Ability
Logical reasoning, pattern recognition, series completion, analogies.
General Knowledge and Current Affairs
Focus on fashion industry news, design world updates, business and technology.
General Knowledge focus
NIFT's GK section has a unique angle: it prioritises fashion, design, and business industry knowledge. While general current affairs are included, a large portion tests awareness of fashion brands, designers, design movements, and fashion industry news. Students who read fashion publications (Vogue, Harper's Bazaar, WWD) and follow design industry updates gain an advantage. Spend 2-3 hours per week reading design and fashion news sources.
CAT: creativity and visual thinking preparation
Understand what CAT tests
The Creativity Assessment Test (CAT) is for B.Des candidates only. It is not a standardised paper like GAT. Official prompts are not released. Instead, CAT evaluates visual thinking, creativity, and problem-solving through tasks assigned on exam day.
Practice with past themes
While official CAT papers are not released, student reports and memory-based compositions from past years give you an idea of the themes NIFT uses. Common themes include observational drawing, colour composition, conceptual problem-solving, and material handling.
Build visual communication daily
Spend 30 minutes daily on observation sketches, quick compositions, and design thinking exercises. This builds the visual language that CAT evaluates. Do not wait until the last month to start.
Focus on process, not perfection
CAT does not reward photorealism or technical rendering. It rewards clarity of thinking, speed of ideation, and ability to communicate a concept visually. Sketch boldly. Experiment. Do not erase endlessly.
CAT task types to practice
- Observational drawing: sketch everyday objects and environments from observation
- Memory-based composition: recall and draw a scene or concept from memory
- Colour theory application: compose a design using specified colours or themes
- Conceptual problem-solving: translate an abstract concept into a visual representation
- Material and form exploration: work with provided materials and create a form or composition
Practice these task types weekly. Do not aim for perfection. Aim for clarity and speed. CAT evaluates how quickly you can generate visual ideas and communicate them, not how polished your final work is.
