NIFT eligibility overview

The National Institute of Fashion Technology (NIFT) entrance exam is open to a wide range of candidates across undergraduate and postgraduate programmes. NIFT sets eligibility criteria for age, educational qualification, and nationality. Unlike many design entrance exams that restrict applications by stream or marks, NIFT keeps its undergraduate eligibility criteria broad, welcoming students from Science, Commerce, and Arts backgrounds equally.

NIFT 2027 examinations are conducted by the National Test Agency (NTA) on behalf of NIFT. Eligibility criteria are announced in the official NIFT notification, typically published in September or October before the exam. This guide covers the eligibility requirements for all major NIFT programmes: B.Des, B.FTech, M.Des, MFM, and M.FTech.

Always verify eligibility against the official NIFT 2027 notification at nift.ac.in before applying. Criteria can be revised annually.

Undergraduate programme eligibility (B.Des and B.FTech)

Educational qualification

Candidates applying for B.Des or B.FTech programmes must have passed or be appearing in Class 12 (10+2) or equivalent from a recognised board. NIFT accepts all boards including CBSE, ICSE, state boards, and equivalent international boards recognised by the Association of Indian Universities.

NIFT does not require any specific stream. Science, Commerce, and Arts students are all equally eligible. There is no minimum aggregate marks requirement in Class 12. This is a significant differentiator: a student with 50% marks in Class 12 is as eligible as one with 95%.

Students currently in Class 12 at the time of application (appearing candidates) may apply. If selected, they must produce their final Class 12 marksheet and pass certificate at the time of admission. Failure to produce valid marksheets will result in cancellation of admission.

Students who completed Class 12 in a previous year are also eligible, provided they fall within the age limit.

Age limit for undergraduate programmes

NIFT imposes a maximum age limit for undergraduate programmes. The age is calculated as of August 1 of the year of admission.

Category Maximum age as of August 1, 2027
General 24 years
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 24 years
EWS 24 years
SC 29 years (5-year relaxation)
ST 29 years (5-year relaxation)
PwD 29 years (5-year relaxation)

For NIFT 2027, General, OBC, and EWS candidates must have been born on or after August 1, 2003. SC, ST, and PwD candidates must have been born on or after August 1, 1998.

There is no minimum age requirement for NIFT undergraduate programmes.

Number of attempts

NIFT does not impose a limit on the number of times a candidate can appear for the entrance exam. Unlike UCEED or JEE, which restrict attempts to two consecutive years, NIFT allows candidates to apply as many times as they wish within the age eligibility window. This means a candidate could theoretically attempt NIFT multiple times between completing Class 12 and reaching the maximum age limit.

Postgraduate programme eligibility (M.Des, MFM, M.FTech)

Educational qualification

For M.Des (Master of Design): candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline from a recognised university. The undergraduate field does not need to be related to design or fashion. Engineers, business graduates, science graduates, and arts graduates are all eligible. Final-year graduation students can apply as appearing candidates.

For MFM (Master of Fashion Management): candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in any discipline. MFM is a management programme rather than a design programme, making it accessible to business, commerce, marketing, and management graduates who want to enter the fashion industry.

For M.FTech (Master of Fashion Technology): candidates must hold a bachelor's degree in Technology, Engineering, or Applied Science, or a bachelor's degree in Textile Technology or Textile Engineering. This programme requires a technical undergraduate background. Check the official notification for the full list of accepted disciplines.

Age limit for postgraduate programmes

NIFT postgraduate programmes (M.Des, MFM, M.FTech) have no upper age limit. Candidates of any age who meet the educational qualification requirement may apply.

Nationality and domicile requirements

Nationality

NIFT is open to Indian nationals. There is a separate NRI/Overseas quota for NRI, PIO, and OCI candidates. Regular seats are reserved for Indian nationals.

No domicile requirement

NIFT has no state domicile or residence requirement. Any Indian national, regardless of home state, may apply for NIFT and be considered for any of the 20 campuses across India. Campus allocation is done through a national counselling process based on merit rank and candidate choice. Students from Maharashtra can be allocated to NIFT Shillong; students from Assam can study at NIFT Delhi. Domicile plays no role.

Category-wise reservation at NIFT

NIFT follows central government reservation norms in seat allocation. This means a defined percentage of seats at each campus and programme are reserved for specific categories.

Category Reservation percentage
OBC (Non-Creamy Layer) 27%
SC 15%
ST 7.5%
EWS 10%
PwD (horizontal reservation) 5% across all categories
General (unreserved) 40.5%

Candidates claiming category reservation must produce valid, current certificates issued by the competent government authority. OBC-NCL certificates must certify Non-Creamy Layer status. EWS certificates must be issued for the current financial year (2026-27 for NIFT 2027 admission). SC and ST certificates must be from the appropriate state government authority.

PwD (Persons with Disability) reservation is horizontal, meaning it applies across all categories (a PwD-SC candidate is counted against the SC quota, not the general PwD quota separately).

Programme-wise test components and selection

Eligibility to apply is the first step. The selection process varies by programme. Understanding which tests apply to you is as important as meeting the eligibility criteria.

Programme Tests required Selection components
B.Des (Fashion Design, Textile Design, Accessory Design, etc.) GAT + CAT GAT 30%, CAT 50%, Situation Test 20%
B.FTech (Apparel Production Management) GAT only GAT 100%
M.Des GAT + CAT GAT 30%, CAT 50%, Portfolio review + PI (20%)
MFM GAT GAT 50%, GD 25%, PI 25%
M.FTech GAT GAT 70%, PI 30%

Note: the Situation Test applies only to B.Des shortlisted candidates. M.Des uses portfolio review and personal interview instead.

Key documents required at the time of application

When you register online, you will need to upload scanned copies of the following documents. Prepare these before starting your application to avoid errors.

A passport-size photograph is required. NIFT specifies exact dimensions and format (white or off-white background, face clearly visible, taken within the last 6 months). Use a professional photograph that meets the format; poor-quality uploads cause application rejection.

A scanned signature on white paper is required for identity verification.

The Class 10 certificate serves as date of birth proof. Upload the certificate or marksheet showing your date of birth. Aadhaar or passport are accepted as alternate date of birth proof.

The Class 12 marksheet (for passed candidates) or an appearing certificate from your school (for Class 12 appearing candidates) must be uploaded. The appearing certificate must be on school letterhead with the principal's signature and seal.

For postgraduate applicants, an undergraduate degree certificate or marksheet is required, along with an appearing certificate if in the final year.

Category certificates (if applicable): OBC-NCL certificate, SC certificate, ST certificate, EWS certificate, or PwD certificate must be uploaded. Certificates must be current and in the government-prescribed format.

Common eligibility mistakes to avoid

One of the most frequent errors is applying without checking the age limit carefully. The age cut-off is August 1 of the admission year, not the exam date. Calculate your age as of August 1, 2027, not as of the application date.

Appearing candidates who do not submit final marksheets at the time of admission risk cancellation. Set a reminder to collect your marksheet before the admission reporting date.

OBC-NCL certificates have annual validity in many states. If your OBC-NCL certificate is from a previous financial year, get a fresh certificate before applying. An expired OBC certificate results in being treated as a General candidate.

Postgraduate candidates sometimes overlook the field-specific requirement for M.FTech. Confirm that your undergraduate discipline qualifies before applying.

What happens after confirming eligibility?

Once you confirm you meet the eligibility criteria, the next step is registering for NIFT 2027 on the official portal at nift.ac.in. Registration typically opens in October-November. The application fee for General category candidates is approximately Rs 2,500 (check the official notification for the exact figure each year). After submitting your application, prepare for the GAT and CAT tests, which are held in February.
